In literature, there exist certain symbolisms which would enable the readers to grasp a deeper understanding for the literary work. These symbolisms also make the literary work more profound as they touch on certain moral, philosophical and society issues that concern humanity. This is exactly what Matthews discusses in her essay concerning the symbol that the  home  or house used in the Lorraine Hansberry s play, A Raisin in the Sun. In the essay, the author points out that the  home,  which is disputed by the characters in the play, is actually more than just a structure which would provide shelter for the Younger family. As the author analyzes the play, she deduces that it means something more like a hope for the family s bleak future. The home can also possibly be a truce between opposing races and be a catalyst for racial discrimination s eradication. Because the essay gives a refreshing and substantial view on what could be one of the important symbolisms of the play, Matthews essay becomes an essential contribution to further appreciation for and understanding of A Raisin in the Sun. However, this essay can improve on how it presents and supplies examples from the play. It is important to provide supporting evidences so as to make claims more believable and valid. Aside from this one small improvement which the essay can do with, the essay is something which can be used by people who want to explore more on the literary greatness of the play as well as on the importance of why symbolisms are a very vital literary element.

Willis, Robert J.  Anger and the Contemporary Black Theatre.  Negro American Literature Forum 8.2 (1974) 213-216. JSTOR. Web. 28 Jan. 2010.

Emotions often play a very important role in the creation of the greatest literary pieces. The emotion of anger over societal norms happens to be the inspiration behind Lorraine Hansberry s critically acclaimed, A Raisin in the Sun. According to the Robert Willis, author of the article, Hansberry uses anger as the foundation in her play, and this is well shown in the portrayal of the characters over the various disputes they have encountered back then, such as the societal practice of looking down on African Americans or  niggers.  The good thing about the essay is that it shows concrete examples of how such anger is reflected in the play and why is anger shown in the first place. This makes the claim more justifiable and credible. The author also juxtaposes the different elements of the life of the Younger family with the real situation of African Americans back then. Because of this situation, the article also gives its readers a detailed peek of the historical-societal aspect of the play. Thus, the article does not only provide a background on why the overall tone and mood of the play is that of suppressed anger, but it also provides a perspective on why such anger exists and why it is greatly suppressed. On the other hand, while the essay provides historical and social milieu of the play, it also focuses on other writers and their literary pieces. This is why the article is a good accompaniment not only to A Raisin in the Sun, but also to the entire picture of the motivating force behind the  Negro American Theatre.
